Corruption in Nigeria- Nandini JB
The essay discusses
corruption in Nigeria through the lens of social mechanisms that contribute to
corruption. Although the author has described three different cases of
financial corruptions and attributed the cause to neo-patrimonialism in
Nigeria, the lack of in-depth analysis makes it problematic. A prominent
question that arises in my mind is that can all the financial scandals (or at
least the ones specified) be brought under the problem of neo-patrimonialism.
Spanish Salsa- Krupa
This essay also analyses
corruption in Spain in the backdrop of the Spanish culture that seems to
encourage abuse of public offices for private gains. The author discusses three
cases that support this argument. The acknowledgement of citizens that
corruption is a part of human nature or that corruption is part of Spanish
culture somehow validates the acts of those in power. This complicates the
understanding of corruption and mechanisms to curb it.
Piled Higher and Deeper: An Analysis
of Denmark- Anand Sreekumar
The author’s
selection of case study is very interesting. Denmark enjoys that status of
least corrupt state in the world, hence unfolding of corruption in Denmark
makes it intriguing. The essay points at two different points of corruption-
weak transparency in political affairs of Denmark and foreign bribery. Keeping
Aristotelian philosophy as the vantage point, Denmark’s case is analysed. But,
perhaps because it is beyond the scope of this assignment, the analysis only
mentions subjectivity and ceases to dig deeper.
